In your poetry book Saint Of, there’s a longing for hybridity, for being not merely one thing but all of the things at once—and all as a part of a healing process, a putting oneself back together again after trauma.
Music is a huge part of my creative process, especially with respect to character development. I was deep in nineties hip hop for LEVERAGE and on my new project I'm rocking a ton of classic rock.
I love hearing about what folks are listening to as they write! And I really feel you on the nineties hip hop—and the more recent hip hop, too. I’m writing an essay that has a lot on Kendrick Lamar right now.
Nice! Of interest, I can't write while listening to songs with lyrics. Too cacophonous for me. I listen to music while doing chores or walking and let my subconscious run wild. Then, when I get back to my draft the ideas start flowing.
While writing, I like classical or electronic music. These last few years I've been in the top 0.1% of listeners to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Highly recommend listening to their soundtracks while writing.
"I think all humans play this game—the back and forth with ourselves and the world around us as we heal, as we grieve, as we grow into ourselves. We are strong until we are vulnerable. And then we are strong because we are vulnerable." I love this! What a gorgeous conversation—I can't wait to read the book!
Aw, thanks so much for your kind words, Amie! I loved having this conversation because I agree that we all struggle with these poles—hiding and wanting to be seen, protecting ourselves and wanting to throw ourselves into the crowd, etc.
Fascinating tete-a-tete.
Thanks for reading! I’m so glad you enjoyed. 💙

I’ll have to try out some Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross during my writing sessions this week!
Yes, lyrics can be distracting and those are some great solutions!
Execellent! Can I turn into a woman so I can write like that?
Also, you've written more books in the last 10 years than I've read in the last 50.
When do you have time to do anything else?
She definitely has the writing gift!
Ha, I chalk it up to obsession. 🤣

Nice interview. Enjoyed the author in Beacon, as well . Would love to read the book.
Thanks! @Lisa Marie Basile’s book is so good!
I love that cover!
I agree! It really fits the mood of the book as well!
Fascinating "tete-a-tete.
